Indeed, the Registry is huge. Sometimes, a search can take a long time to complete. Yet that’s why the Find command exists.
• I generally close the Find dialog box after the first find result. You don’t have to close the dialog box, but it does get in the way.
• You can press the F3 key to repeat the last Find command. The F3 shortcut is handy because it lets you repeat a search without reopening the Find dialog box.
Registry Cleaning
Oh, how many times do I need to say that you don’t need to mess with the Registry? I shouldn’t even bother repeating myself, but I do. To bring the message home, I’d like to address the issue of cleaning the Registry. In a word: Don’t.
Sure, some third-party utilities claim that they can somehow miraculously scour the Registry and remove redundant entries and unused keys and values or purge the Registry of nasty things. Although that statement might be true, it’s probably not. Therefore, I don’t recommend using a Registry cleaner or even attempting to do so on your own.
• Many of those free Registry cleaners that you download from the Internet are really spyware or some other form of malware. They serve only to slow down your computer, making the problem worse.
• Honestly, it would be impossible for any third-party program to know which Registry keys are useless and whether they can be deleted. To assume that any program would know that information is ridiculous.
• Cleaning the Registry may do more damage than good.
• No evidence exists that any Registry cleaning utility provides any improvement in performance.
• I can, however, recommend antispyware programs or other utilities that purge spyware and other nasty programs from the Registry. These programs know what to look for and, therefore, do something useful. (See Book IV, Chapter 4 for more information.)
